Turning Tides’ mission is to connect people with the ocean, the critters that live in it, and the scientists who study it.

A message from the founder

Hello!

Hello! I’m Aubrey, and I’m excited you’re visiting our website! Over the course of my career, I’ve worn many hats. My master’s thesis was on American lobsters and I can talk about them for hours, but I’m also well versed in fisheries, invasive species, and marine spatial planning. I’ve published my research in several different scientific journals, engaged in outreach and teaching at all levels (including at the Smithsonian Natural History Museum!), spent months at sea, and logged hundreds of hours in the intertidal zone.

Turning Tides is the culmination of all of my experiences in the field of marine science. Through guided tide pooling, I hope to share all of the fascinating things I’ve learned about Maine’s coast with locals and tourists alike, showing folks that there is so much more to a puddle of saltwater than meets the eye.

After our first year’s success, I am focusing on expanding Turning Tides’ low-cost and no-cost offerings, creating more engaging and accessible ocean education content, and partnering with other organizations to plan new and exciting events.

I also hope to see Turning Tides grow to offer unique ocean education opportunities on a greater spatial scale. I’m very interested in leveraging what I’ve built with this small business to offer meaningful, flexible income opportunities to other marine scientists within and outside of Maine.

If you’re here browsing the website and thinking about booking, I hope we will tide pool together soon! If you’re interested in collaborating on a science-centered event or interested in being a tide pool guide, please reach out!

Warmly,

Aubrey
